Canada became Canada on July 1, 1867, the date of Confederation. Until then, British North America was governed by Great Britain. But by the mid-1800s Britain could no longer afford to govern its colonies – so the process to grant Canada independence began. As you’ll see, this process didn’t end until 1982!
